ACCESSORY STYLE: How to change your earrings studs to hooks

JDS - CHANGING YOUR EARRINGS

Have you ever bought a pair of earrings from a chain store, regardless of it being costume or otherwise, and found that after wearing them your holes were incredibly sore and you couldn’t wait to get them out?

Yep, me too. And it isn’t always the stud backs either. Cheap wire earrings can also make your ears sore. The trick to that is coating it in clear nail polish, but that won’t work on studs as you have the metal, or plastic, stud back to slid on and off and the polish will eventually come off in clumps.

The easiest way is to simply change them to hooks.

A few weeks back I wore these black earrings but they hurt and I decided to change them.

Thankfully, they still look good with hooks and the stud part is not missed. It also happened with these red earrings I wore last week.

Now the trick with earrings that have a joined stud section is that it’s a little harder to remove but you use the same trick as with the hooks.

Step 1 and 3 are relatively the same. You use your jewellery pliers to gently bend the ring side ways and what you have left is no 2, two earrings without their studs. Slide the hooks on and close them. Now you have earrings that will not make your holes sore.

For the record, cheap hooks can still infect your ears. I use surgical steel hooks which don’t infect. If you change to hooks and still have an issue, coat them in a fine layer of clear nail polish.

Have you guys ever had to change your earring studs to hooks because your ears became infected or did you just throw the earrings away?
