MOVIE REVIEWS: Barbie and The Fall Guy

The only thing, or should I say person, worth watching in both of these movies is Ryan Gosling.

I watched Barbie twice, and didn’t like it except for Ryan.

At the beginning of the movie all of the Barbies saying hi annoyed me as it just went on and on.

Barbie’s hair not being the typical big bouffant white blonde do that she has as a trademark, annoyed me and made her unreal. She did NOT have a fringe, and her hair was NEVER flat.

The carry on over her feet being flat was unnecessary, I didn’t need to see Barbies pretending to barf.

Will Ferrel. For me, he ruined the Lego movies, so does he have to be in everything? Jesus!

The Ken-off. It went on for a while but was probably the highlight. As was Ken crying in Barbie’s dream bed and trying to kiss her while figuring himself out, and then wearing his multicoloured Kenough hoodie.

The only time I cried was when Ruth turned up in Barbieland.

And don’t get me started about the ending. She went to her gynaecologist. Barbie’s not freakin’ real, she ain’t got a hoo-ha to examine. She has a mound of plastic.

Was there a message? Apparently there was, but I didn’t watch it for a message. Patriarchy, being human, I don’t know what it was technically. When I watch a movie I want to be entertained, I don’t want a message shoved down my throat. That’s not the point of storytelling which is to tell a good story.

Onto The Fall Guy.

The movie used my absolute favourite Kiss song, I Was Made for Lovin’ You. And it’s not just my favourite Kiss song, but the best rock ‘n roll love song ever.

We also heard AC/DC’s Thunderstuck. Always a good song to have in a movie and it’s in many.

Against all Odds by Phil Collins is another great love song that featured.

And then there was the Miami Vice speeding boat on the harbour scene that even used the Miami Vice music.

Hannah Waddingham as Gayle. I’m really over her. Her behaviour at the Olivier awards when she swore and fell to the stage laughing was a right turn off. Show-offs and exhibitionists annoy me and her character in this movie annoyed me.

Ryan, dressed as the alien, flipping the bird to Gayle in Jody’s trailer. Blink and you’ll miss it, but funny nonetheless. And then he flips a double bird at her just before falling out of the helicopter.

The ending, which has The Fall Guy theme from the original show, sung by Blake Shelton, also has Lee Majors in a small cameo role.

For me, the movie’s reminiscent of The Gray Man which Ryan also starred in and is pretty good. Irononically, in that movie, Chris Evan’s character is trying to kill Ryan’s and says, and this was clearly prophetic, “extra ten million to the first guy to put a bullet in this Ken doll’s brain.”

I prefer action/adventure movies with a lot of comedy thrown in these days over anything else. And while I haven’t watched a lot of Ryan’s movies, if any more are like these, then I will be.

As for Barbie and The Fall Guy. Would I watch Barbie again? No, except for Ken’s big Ken-off scenes. Would I watch The Fall Guy again? Absolutely.

Barbie scored 5/10, The Fall Guy 8/10.
