Am I right? Did anything worth writing about actually happen this week? Not that I can think of. No births, no disasters, no awards show I’m interested in, so I’ll talk about disaster movies.
I’ve talked about them before. I LOVE THEM. L.O.V.E LOVE THEM. I love seeing special effects, buildings being blown up, earthquakes destroying small villages, people dying and getting what they deserve and so far 2012 has been my personal favourite. So I dug into the YouTube archives and found some from years gone by.
First off we have the three made for tv movies (haven’t found Category 7: End of The World yet) in Category 6: Day of Desrtuction (featuring Thomas Gibson and Nancy McKeon), then 10.5 and 10.5 Apocalypse featuring Kim Delany. The good thing about these two movies is they were filmed together so you have the same people and continuity.

Earthquake 10.5: The West coast of Northern America suffers an unprecedented series of major earthquakes in a matter of days, puzzling seismologists, including Dr. Jordan Fisher’s team. His maverick assistant Samantha Hill comes up with a theory, which they confirm on site, that a deep tectonic rift links them and is likely to sink most of California into the Pacific. The only imaginable counter-measures are subterranean nuclear explosions. Three succeed, one rather causes a new problem. Meanwhile federal and other authorities as well as various people wrestle with side-effects like landslides and cope with a huge refugee exodus.
10.5 Apocalypse: Another massive 10.5 quake tears apart the West Coast, threatening to turn the American landscape into a hellish wasteland. Seismologist Samantha Hill sees an even greater threat: an ever-widening fault line that’s heading straight for the country’s two largest nuclear reactors. If a meltdown occurs, millions will die. Samantha and the American president agree only one man can help them-the scientist who predicted this terrifying natural disaster years before-Samantha’s own father, Dr. Earl Hill, now counted as a possible casualty of a massive Las Vegas quake. Together with a crack rescue team including Brad and Will, Samantha must find her father and stop the fault from slicing uncontrollably toward millions of people and the ultimate nuclear apocalypse.

The Day After: The frightening story of the weeks leading up to and following a nuclear strike on the United States. The bulk of the activity centres around the town of Lawrence, Kansas.
A very interesting movie and I vaguely maybe seeing it on tv. I cannot believe how possible some of these movies are and it freaks the shit out of me.
The next two movies were stupid and I fast forwarded through them.
The Day The Earth Caught Fire: Hysterical panic has engulfed the world after the United States and the Soviet Union simultaneously detonate nuclear devices and have caused the orbit of the Earth to alter, sending it hurtling towards the sun.
When Worlds Collide: David Randall is a carefree ladies man and skilled pilot who finds he has been let in on the greatest and most terrible secret in the world when he is paid to deliver some mysterious pictures from one eminent astronomer to another. The recipient, Dr. Hendron, confirms the awful findings of the sender: the star Bellus will collide with Earth and wipe out all of humanity. Despite widespread disbelief, two philanthropists give Dr. Hendron some of the money he needs to build a rocket ship that will, at least theoretically, take them to Zyra, a planet which is orbiting Bellus which may or may not be habitable for humans. The rest of the money comes from Sydney Stanton, a wheelchair-bound old man, who insists he come along, despite the severe limitations on the number of passengers and amount of cargo. Meanwhile, as doomsday approaches, Randall is surprised to find himself in a love triangle with Dr. Hendron’s daughter and her fiancé. Humanity is in peril, and only a modern-day Noah’s ark.
Next comes three schlocky disaster movies.
L.A. Apocalypse: For 5 billion years the Earth’s core has operated like a giant, nuclear reactor. Now it’s overheated, melting down like a bomb that’s about to explode. The earth is being ripped apart at the seams and beneath LA, pressure is building. After a mass evacuation, Calvin Crawford is one of few left, desperately searching for his fiancée, Ashley Pace, who unbeknownst to him, has been kidnapped and is being held hostage. With LA becoming more unstable by the minute, Calvin, must find a way to save Ashley and get them both to safety before the city is completely annihilated.
Earthquake in New York: A cop is after a nasty serial killer. Cop’s wife and kids are somewhere in the city too. Then a disastrous earthquake hits the city.
The Black Hole: It’s 2 A.M. in St. Louis when a routine scientific experiment goes terribly wrong and an explosion shakes the city. A scientific team investigates, clashing with an intergalactic, voltage-devouring creature that vaporizes them. By 7 A.M. a chain of earthquakes is tearing the city apart while a massive swirling black hole is consuming the remains. The alien is devouring every source of electricity it finds and destroying every human who blocks its way. Mass chaos rules as St. Louis is being evacuated. Only a few people, scientist Eric Bryce, his assistant Shannon, and General Ryker comprehend the mortal danger. By midnight, the Pentagon initiates a nuclear attack against the black hole. Bryce has only one hour to find a solution to obliterate the alien and the colossal black hole before mankind is annihilated.
All three are stupid made for tv movies (I suppose as they’re so schlocky) and you just want to punch the characters in the head. Greg Evigan was a good looking rooster in his day and I cannot believe Judd Nelson would stoop to making shit. But I guess sometime actors need to take the money where they can get it.
Stonados…really?….Really? Oh, these three are so bad, but then considering they make Sharknado now, I guess some people love the schlock factor. Even though this reboot of Salem’s Lot was made here in Aus and featured a mainly Aussie cast I wanted it to end. It was bad.
Seattle Superstorm: NASA scientist Tom Reynolds thought everything would be fine when he moved to Seattle to be with his fiancé, Navy Lieutenant Emma Peterson. But when his gearhead son Wyatt can’t stop fighting with her green-minded daughter Chloe, they realize that this new family may not make it. And things aren’t just stormy on the home front; when an unidentified object is shot down by the military and crashes into Puget Sound, it sets off a series of strange weather phenomena: earthquakes, tornados, lightning storms… and they’re spreading. Now, this new family must find a way to work together to save the city, and each other, before it’s too late
Stonados: When a tornado appears in the waters south of Boston, former storm chaser Joe Randall is intrigued by the unusual weather. But as twisters begin to strike across the Boston shoreline, Joe quickly realizes this is no ordinary storm front. As the storms threaten to move inland, the citizens of Boston find themselves trapped in a tempest turning deadlier by the minute. With the city under siege, Joe, his sister Maddy and his old storm chasing partner Lee realize they’re dealing with a never before seen weather phenomenon known as Stonados. The only chance of stopping the storm is an untested theory about weather manipulation… the same theory that Joe has been trying to prove for over a decade. But with the storm spreading and threatening the entire Eastern Seaboard-as well as Joe’s children who are trapped in a storm-besieged stadium-Joe and his motley crew will have to give it a try, either saving the world… or accelerating its destruction!
Salem’s Lot: Ben Mears, a writer returns to the small Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot (also known as Salem’s Lot), where he spent the first
few years of his life, to write a book. Little does he or the townsfolk realize that a couple of other new residents are coming…Straker, an antiques dealer, and his partner and master Barlow, a ancient and malevolent vampire bent on making Salem’s Lot his new home.

So those are the disaster flicks I’ve watched and cannot wait for San Andreas. It looks very similar to 2012 and I LOVE that movie.
